Hinode Flare Dynamics

Evaporation in a flare

Science Goal:

To observe the location of evaporation during a flare. These sequences will
be run in the first 3 months. There are 3 studies which are detailed below:

Fast raster Line selection:
  1. Core line list + Fe XXIV 192, Fe XV 284, Fe X (184.5)
  2. FOV 200" X 200" with 2" slit
  3. Cadence for 1 raster is 2.5 mins with 1 s exposure.
  4. Allow windows to be wide enough for velocities of around 400 km/s (so at least 30 pixels).
  5. Target: pre-select an active region with a complex magnetic topology.
Spectral Imaging mode Line selection:
  1. Core line list + Fe XXIV 192, F eXV 284, Fe X (184.5)
  2. Using the 40" slot at 2-3 positions (at least a FOV of 80X512")
  3. Exposure of 1 s.
  4. Need to work out reliable exposure times
  5. Use this only if there is a flare productive active region.
Using the flare trigger Line selection:
  1. Core line list + Fe X, Fe XV 284, Fe XXIV, Fe XXIII, Fe XXII (253)
250" slot to search for a region increasing in intensity
    (using the EIS flare trigger).
  2. Using He II or Fe XXIV to trigger.
  3. Zoom in still using the 250" slot with a FOV 150"X150" and start the
    AEC. Cadence of 10 s
  4. This gives us both the detailed velocity info of the raster and the
large vel shifts that may be seen at the beginning of a flare.
